My Secret? I’m OVER the Holidays

Ahhh, the holidays.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year...right? RIGHT?

And gosh it starts earlier and earlier every year.

It’s November, NOVEMBER! Thanksgiving is really getting a raw deal.

Back to Christmas…

There is just something about waiting in line to see Santa at the mall for 2 hours while my kids are in super uncomfortable, dressy clothes standing in front of an Auntie Anne’s pretzel place at 7pm on the Eve of Christmas eve that doesn’t sound all that attractive. Maybe it’s just me?

No?

I’m not the only one that doesn’t want to be up until 1am making the perfectly Pinterested Candy Cane Sleighs for my child’s classroom party (Look it up, it’s a thing. Not a thing I want to do but a thing nonetheless).

Okay, I didn’t think so…

So seriously, WHY do we do this to ourselves as moms? Who got up and was like, ‘you know what, let’s set ridiculous standards and deadlines for busy moms - that’s the ticket.’

No. No it’s not.

Before my kids were in school I loved the holidays. I was so excited for Christmas, I loved New Year's, I really loved shopping for everyone on my list.

Now that my kids are in school and older it just feels….different. Every commercial that comes on “Mommy, I want that.” I feel rushed and the whole season seems to miss the point. Maybe I’m missing the point and I’ll own that (ponders deeply).

I’m taking back the holidays. Seriously, hear me out...

MOM HOLIDAY MEMO

TO: Fellow Moms

FROM: 7 Charming Sisters

DATE: November 2, 2017

Effective immediately, there is to be no more ‘team too much’ behavior during the holidays. Let’s all relax and enjoy our families and the spirit of the season. Here are the new rules for this holiday season:

    1. All Holiday Shopping will be Done Online: Gone are the days when we had to wait outside Wal-Mart for the best deals on Thanksgiving.  The same deals are online now (trust me, I’ve a recovering Black Friday shopper).
    2. We’re Not Doing Pinterest: Seriously, we just aren't doing it anymore. Tell your friends. Over the top pinterest snacks will be rejected at the school holiday brunch.
    3. It’s Okay to Say No: In fact, it’s now preferred. If you don’t want to go to the work Christmas party, don’t go. Pampered Chef holiday party? Hard pass. If you don’t want to go, don’t do it.
    4. Participate, Don’t Facilitate: Last, and maybe the most important - We are going to participate in the holidays this year. I’m not going to play the part of the magical scheduler. I’m going to enjoy Every. Single. Minute of my time with my family and I’m not going to look at my watch or worry about what I’m cooking. Hell, I might even do carry out. I am going to be PART of the fun this year rather than making it all happen.

So, in my best Jerry McGuire voice…’who's coming with me?’
